The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
