The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
