The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
