Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
