Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
